2nd round - Donington Park GP
07-09 April 2006
Donington Park…..or
rather Donington Pond!
With its fast
flowing corners Donington Park is another one of Craig’s favourites, but
this year it’ll be one to forget!
With the Brands
Hatch win under his belt Craig was on a confident high.
Free practice
was just a shake down to get the bike dialled in and he came away with
3rd fastest overall. There were a few problems with the bike pitching
forward though so for Qualifying 1 later that day Craig made some alterations
improving his lap time, but dropping to 7th fastest.
Qualifying 2 was
under bitterly cold windy conditions, but with a few more finer adjustments
chipped away to qualify 5th fastest and improving his lap time yet again.
Sunday was to
become “one of those days” The forecast for the rest of the day was not
good, but nobody was prepared for the amount of wind and rain that lashed
the circuit – a canoe would have been more appropriate!! Fortunately Craig
doesn’t mind a bit of water so was keen to show what he can do.
On the opening
lap he muscled his way into 2nd place and slotted in behind Brendan Roberts.
They immediately pulled a gap on the rest of the field and Craig played
it cool to hound Brendan into Foggy esses. With better drive out of the
esses Craig looked at a pass going into the Melbourne loop, but thought
better of it and slotted in behind Brendan…..then it happened!
Within a flash
the rear end broke loose mid corner and highsided Craig over the bike
landing him on the handle bar.
Immediately Craig
looked to remount, but Marshalls were screaming at him to get off the
track. Which in hindsight turned out to be the right move as Craig suddenly
realised he’d hurt his wrist and whilst checking the bike out the clutch
lever had broken off and the gear lever was bent.
DNF’s are never
nice and with the perfect Brands Hatch start Craig is now even more determined
to make amends at Thruxton on Easter Monday.
Lets hope the
weather doesn’t play a part!
